Crows Hall

Pictures of buildings mentioned in the second edition “Suffolk” volume of “The Buildings of England” series by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner.

Crows Hall is included with Debenham in the third edition and lies just outside the village. In the second edition Pevsner says of it: Red brick with blue diapering. Built in 1508., but incorporating early C14 parts. Finely placed inside a moat which is crossed by a four-arched brick-bridge. The house was much larger than it is now. All that remains is part of the gatehouse and the major part of the N wing. There was a corresponding S wing, and the centre was the E range in line with the gatehouse. The front of the remaining wing has polygonal angle buttresses, a straight gable with three pinnacles, and original transomed wooden windows. The gatehouse also has polygonal buttresses. Just outside the SW corner of the moat outbuildings with some terracotta plaques of the style of the work of c1525 at Shrubland Old Hall."
