Akenham

Pictures of buildings mentioned in the second edition “Suffolk” volume of “The Buildings of England” series by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner.

Akenham is a hamlet just to the north of Ipswich. Part of the name possibly was lent to the fictional title of Ronald Blyth’s famous book Akenfield, which was a true portrait of a Suffolk village based on Charsfield.

Pevsner (p71) lists only the Church and one house, Rise Hall, which is shown here in two views. Of it he says “... near the church. Handsome Late Georgian house of red brick. Two storeys, three bays. Wide doorway with Roman Doric pilasters, a metrope frieze, and a straight top”.
